Dr Tone Fish Photo Editor

So it is not all hard work. Here is Dr Tone FOTW fish photo editor drifting along a reef high on a tank of Nitrox. First choice on remedies for beating the credit crunch we think.

The Chase

Here we see a Cornet fish in hot pursuit of a Masked Butterfly fish.
Who said oppisites dont attract!.

Caribbean Spiney Lobster

Mr Thermodore here was lurking under a coral head off the southern tip of Grenada recently. Intrestingly they seem to swim backwards so its no wonder they find parking themselves in the coral holes easy.

Flathead Scorpionfish

To complete our series of camouflage fish here is a fine example of a Flathead Scorpionfish. Again spotted on the same night dive on Fanidir reef as last weeks fish of the week.

A little more hairy than is bearded cousin and a flatter snout are its distinguishing features. Another ogly bugger.

Sunday, November 23

Crocodile fish

During a night dive on Fanidir reef we came across this 1 metre long Crocodile fish. When we first saw it was free swimming and whooshed through our torch beams before assuming its more common attitude laid flat on a sandy patch.

Sunday, November 16

Devil Scorpionfish

This criter was seen dragging itself across a sandy patch on Fanidir dive site in Hurghada.
We did not get to see its underside but apparently it is bright orange and yellow. An ugly bugger if I have ever seen one.

F1 FOTW exclusive

Whilst Lewis Hamilton was racing himself to become World Champion last weekend FOTW divers were continuing their search for Lewis's first F1 car which went missing during practice at the Melbourne Grand Prix.
FOTW can exclusively reveal that we have found it.

Hotel Report La Perla Hurghada

As a new feature Fishoftheweek are now running a series of reports on top hotels in top dive resorts.. Our first report is on the La Perla in Hurghada. Unlike many hotels in Hurghada it is actually finished. This is its one and only plus point other than the fact that we paid the princely sum of £33 for the week. Given this, one might expect a less than perfect hotel experience and this is exactly what we actually got. First off, the first night was spent in the hotel next door because they had no rooms. As a concession we received a complimentary dinner which was pretty poor. Once we got a room and having fixed the towel rail, loo roll holder, unplugged all of the electrical equipment in the room as they were connected to a single power outlet via an adaptor which had itself into a round ball of molten plastic, we settled in for a relaxing stay.
The staff were generally friendly and eager to help although not very good at it. The breakfast buffet was identical seven days in a row, the coffee was drinkable but only with a clothes peg on your nose.

Nevertheless as harden divers we enjoyed our stay. The air conditioning system worked fine and we optimised the enjoyment of our stay by spending as much time as possible away from the La Perla. If you are looking for some where to simply put your head down between dives it is worth considering La Perla. Otherwise look elsewhere.
It is also worth noting that the hotel where James Bond finally ends up in his latest adventure Quantum of Solace is also called the La Perla. In the movie the hotel is blown up in the process of getting all of hte badies.. On reflection not a bad idea really. Wish I had thought of that when I was out in Hurghada.

Spotlight Parrotfish

Another crap photograph this time taken by me. Sorry. Well hopefully it will be the last of the back catalogue. FOTW divers are once again heading off to the Red Sea to scour the reefs for your delight. Hopefully Pete will have bought himself a camera by then which he can use underwater.

A Star Fish ??

No one at FOTW has accepted responsibility for this photo.

Not surprised really and I am not sure it is actually a star fish either.

Wednesday, October 8

Blue Spotted Eagle Ray

Very blue and a bit spotty. Otherwise known as shark food as sharks love um...

Wednesday, October 1

Surgeonfish

This chap was seen picking stuff off some granite boulder in the Similan Islands. Did not look particularly appetising to me but he seems to thrive on whatever it is.

Wednesday, September 24

Flyiing off to Egypt this weekend....

FOTW can exclusively announce that we can get some planes cheap....Unfortunately only extra large ones this time around.

Saturday, September 20

Yellow Snappers

Just very yellow and a bit snappy

Monday, September 8

Lobster like thing

Probably has a real name but no time do any research, sorry folks.
Nice anemone too.

Dominica - Turtle

This little turtle was photographed in the warm waters of Dominica by FOTW Friends Katie and Gareth. I am assured he was moving so fast that capturing his back half was impossible.
Perhaps the speed explains why these creatures turn up around the Irish Coast.

A firm favourite of FOTW

Wally seen here in the blue waters of the Carribean. Thanks Katie and Gareth for this blue photgraph.

Monday, August 18

Caribbean Lobster

Interestingly these beauties swim backwards. It explains why they are always spotted looking out of their coral holes.

Monday, July 7

Dominica - Sea Horse

Thanks to FOTW friends Katie & Gareth for this little darling hanging out amongst the coral in the Dominica. A good spot.

Fish Art

A snapper I think posing against the day (Contra Jour for our French visitors) We go to great lengths (and depths) to bring you the best.

The fish are back

Regular visitors to http://www.fishoftheweek.com/ (do we have any, please let me know by posting some comments) will have noticed the lack of fish recently. Well, were back for the Summer season with some more delights to wet your regulators.
Oh by the way, Pete caught a real beauty on May 11th. Congratulations to Pete and hopefully we shall see some underwater shots soon.

Cute little shrimp

This chap was spotted in the Similan Islands weighing up the threat level of our FOTW divers pushing polycarbonate clad cameras into his face

Cabbage Fishes

We are indeed very lucky to have received this stunning photograph in the FOTW mailbox this week. A rarely seen but aptly named cabbage fish. Where do you have to go to see these I hear you asking? Well a condition of being able to post this on FOTW was that we can not divulge there habitat. WWF have placed the cabbage fish on their most endanged species list. Truly a first for FOTW.

FOTW is Back

Regulars to fishoftheweek will no doubt have been a little disappointed since Christmas to discover that the FOTW week site has been rather quiet. FOTW staff have been busy with other aspects of their fishy lives. After all we are not nerds here at FOTW. Well we are back, with time on our hands and fish to drop on your desktop. A recent trip to the Caribbean has resulting in FOTW divers making a significant fish discovery. In the near future we hope to bring the first images of a never previously photographed species. Watch this space.......
