Cornish Showcase - Spider Crab

Anyone tell which end is which? FOTW friends Katy and Gareth dodged surfers just off Newquay to grab this one.
Once again thanks for your cornish delights. Any chance of a piccy of a pasty or some clotted cream?

Cornish Showcase - Dogfish

Our penultimate creature from Cornish waters is the humble dogfish. This one gave itself away by barking at a passing post office boat delivering mail to St Ives. Once again we are indebted to FOTW friends Katy and Gareth for being in there when it mattered.

Monday, November 26

Cornish Showcase - Curled Octopus

Our third photo in our Cornish showcase is an excellent snap of a octopus taken while FOTW friends Katy and Gareth were diving just off Newquay. More evidence that it is worth braving the cooler waters of the UK.

Tuesday, October 30

Cornish Showcase - Mating Sea Hares

More evidence from FOTW friends Katy and Gareth that our own waters have some spectacular things to see.

Sunday, October 21

Cornish Showcase - Cuttlefish

As promised we are featuring some home grown specimen to wet your underwater appetites The first of our Cornish Showcase is this cute little cuttlefish spotted just off Lamorna by FOTW friends Gareth and Katy. Thanks guys for the photos.

If you are tempted to visit Cornwall, FOTW can recommend Coast to Coast (BBC Radio Cornwall Monday to Friday 6am until 9am) for all your local news and events. An excellent listen I am reliably informed.

Sunday, October 14

Scorpianfish

Further to previous claims of dwindling fish stocks at FOTW this one has been dug out of the archives. FOTW can also announce a forthcoming Cornwall showcase including some wonderful creatures spotted just off our own sub tropical (well....) coast line. Watch this space.

Blue Tit

Strictly speaking not a fish but I have seen one or two blue tits following long dives in colder waters. This one however was spotted recently in land locked Leeds in our garden. Unlike many of the wild life feature on FOTW it spends very little time underwater. You will not have seen one of these in the Red Sea.

FOTW Wine Correspondent Completes Mablethorpe Marathon

FOTW can reveal that John, FOTW's wine correspondent successfully completed the Mablethorpe Marathon in a semi decent time for a 40 something wine sleuth. John's time was 4 hours 33 minutes and 35 seconds. In completing the race John earned lots of money (mainly mine) for a local Wakefield Charity for re-educating recovering drug addicts. Well done John, perhaps now you can get on and write some wine reports for FOTW.

Sunday, September 2

Lovely Fresh Fish

Just an hour after catching several of these Mackerel from the English Channel they were on the barbecue at Tom's Field Campsite near Swanage. Lovely

FOTW Wheels come off

FOTW sadly reports that due to pressure of work the FOTW team will not be able to make its annual pilgrimage to the Red Sea this year to collect fish photos for your delight. Even though extensive planning attempts were made to find suitable windows in busy schedules no windows remain open. The editorial board will be reviewing suggestions for future content in the next couple of weeks. We can however confirm that FOTW will not be renamed FOTY to reflect the enevitable slow down in picture content likly as a result of the cancelled dive sortee. Watch this space...... especially for fish.

FOTW Celebrate

Congrats to the youngest fully paid up member of FOTW Richard, who appropriately on Yorkshire Day celebrates his 30th BD today. Picture to follow (when I have found one of Richard clad in Neoprene) for all you single female scuba divers out there.

Marble Topped Eagle Ray

Continuing the ray theme here is a shy marble topped one, probably waiting for a passing Aussie to get closely acquainted with

Wednesday, July 11

Ultimate Ladies Scuba Style

The latest in dive fashion ! Surprising these do not originate from Italy as one might expect but I would love to see a few top models strutting their stuff down a Milan cat walk in them.

Tuesday, July 3

Blue Spotted Eagle Ray

More shark food for your desktop. This one is getting a brush up from a local cleaner wrasse, before heading out on the reef for a good night out.

Saturday, June 23

Juvenile Moray

Doing what he is meant to do this little chap is gettinig used to life as a moray, pokeing out from a coral hole and being claend by a passing wrasse.

Saturday, June 16

Tigertailed Seahorses

Another first for FOTW, this time two tigertailed seahorses seen here clinging to Richlieu Rock.

Tuesday, June 5

Bluefin Tuna Reprieve

FOTW are happy to hear that Gordon Ramsay is to take Bluefin Tuna, an endangered fish, off the menu in his restaurants after criticism from conservationists and the Government. Bluefin tuna is being fished out of the Atlantic and Mediterranean with a rapidity that has left it on the verge of commercial extinction.

So Gordon is not a such a f*****g K**b h**d as he makes out he is on TV. Well maybe his is? Post your comments on Gordon Ramsay to FOTW.

Frog Fish

I know, its a bit out of focus but I was shaking with excitement when I spotted this chap. Little did I know he had been sitting on the same piece of rock for over three weeks.

Wednesday, May 30

Lion fish

Once again we feature a Lion fish as our fish of the week. Unlike those floating around the Red Sea, who seem to be either mostly noctural or at least very shy during the day, their Thai cousins seem more comfortable with spreading their fins, spikes etc during daylight hours.

Tuesday, May 22

Varicose Wart Slug

The Varicose Wart Slug is an expert in chemical defence. When these chaps get stressed they produce pungent toxins. A sort of BO really. Probably explains the fact that they are not predated. Just as well me thinks.

Monday, May 14

Cleaner Shrimps

Presumably Mike (our dive leader pictured here) had made arrangements beforehand with the Giant Moray (off shot to the right of this picture) about borrowing his cleaner shrimp for some gentle dental flossing.
If you are looking for a liveaboard that takes in the Similan Islands in Thailand you should check out the Colona VI. Small, friendly and very professional. www.phuket-scuba-club.com/colona.html

Tuesday, May 8

Coral Grouper

No hypnosis from this grouper, just a long surly stare to say "What are you doing on my reef!"

Thursday, May 3

Look into my eyes ......

This week FOTW can exclusively reveal that some Giant Moray are now training in hypnosis as a technique to lure prey. This one tried without success I hasten to add to draw our photographer in in an attempt to lop off a stray thumb. FOTW would like to remind all contributors that they take photo's at the own risk.

Monday, April 30

Sea Cucumber

You've seen the pooh, now we bring you the culprit. Yes this delightful creature was responsible for the pile of doo featured earlier on this month.

Tuesday, April 24

Koh Bon - Manta Heaven

Koh Bon is a must for all Manta Junkies. The pictures speak for themselves

Friday, April 20

Sea Cucumber Pooh

As you have come to expect at FOTW, we have and continue to go to great lengths to bring great images from the undersea world. Well it would appear that a friendly Sea Cucumber has also gone to great lengths to satisfy FOTW regulars. This Sea Cucumber pooh was approached with great care during a sunset dive recently. The local parrot fish, who mains purpose in life is to sprinkle digested coral liberally along tropical reefs, have some way to go to top this, or is it bottom this, I don't know.

Monday, April 16

Wally the Napoleon Wrasse

Always a pleasure to have one of these stunning creatures glide past you. This one was encountered on Christmas Tree on Similan Island No.9. Now a protected species, the Napoleon Wrasse must rank amongst one of the most graceful fish there is so see. By the way, all Nap Wrasse are affectionately known as Wally by the FOTW team after a superb specimen seen on the Great Barrier Reef years ago.

Sunday, April 15

Clown Triggerish

This rare beauty was spotted recently by FOTW divers on Deep Six, Similan Island No.7.

Tuesday, April 10

Lily the Hawksbill Turtle

Lily the turtle can be found at lunchtime every day in Horsehsoe Bay on Island No 8 in the Similan Islands looking for free handouts from the dive boats.

Thursday, April 5

Giant Moray Eel

Were back, and with it some excellent underwater images from the Similan Islands. Heres the first one to be going on with whilst I continue to recover from jet lag.

Friday, March 16

Spotlight Parrotfish

Fortunately for FOTW regulars more photographic assaults on the undersea world are imminent so we will not be relying on archive photos from previous trips for much longer. This one was spotted at 'The Deep' in Hull. Don't forget you can have your pictures publish on FOTW. Send them to the fish photo editor tony@fishoftheweek.com Promises of £20 notes will have a positive effect on likelihood of them being selected.

Thursday, March 8

Yellow Butterflyfish

Confirmation that FOTW stop at no lengths to bring you the best of underwater snaps. A select group of FOTW divers are as we speak, preparing to endure severe personal discomfort by sitting motionless for 13 hours while Thai airlines whizz then off to Phuket. Whereupon further discomfort will be endured in a rough old sea crossing to the Similan Islands from where we hope to bring you a live underwater web cam satellite feed from Fantasy Reef of the schooling Mantas and possible other things. Watch this space.

Monday, March 5

Big eyed Emperor Fish

Always worth keeping a look out into the blue. You never know what might be out there!

Friday, March 2

Lion Fish

Still not got my definitive photo of one of these as yet but I am getting close. This chap was seen lurking around on a nice reef in the Red sea.

Thursday, March 1

More Carps of the Koi variety

Whilst rummaging through FOTW's extensive electronic post bag of fishy pictures I came across this splendid piccy from Cathy, one of our most loyal surfers. It just goes to show that you do not have to go far to capture an excellent fish image. These two beauties were seen at Canal Gardens in Roundhay in Leeds. For those of you wanting to dive at Canal Gardens, FOTW have negotiated an exclusive members only dive evening. Email Pete@fishoftheweek.com for more details.

Wednesday, February 28

Giant Moray

New look fish of the week, same old carp. Oh well, we keep on trying. This weeks desktop fish offering is a friendly giant moray seen here with his mouth open waiting for his teeth to be cleaned. Fortunately for me I forgot my tooth brush on this particular dive. Fortunately for the moray there were cleaner wrasse on hand.

Friday, February 16

New Look FOTW

Hi to all our regulars .. I hope you like the new look.

End Unruly Hair Misery

Forget Brylcreem... jellyFish is the product for controlling unruly hair - so BUY it at boots today.

It's made out of fish, looks cool in your bathroom and it smells of coconut.

Wednesday, February 14

Giant Pufferfish

For Valentines Day I thought this was an appropriate picture. This Giant Puffer would be high up on the list of top celebrity kissers. Eat your heart out Leslie Ashe. Not so sure about the HRH Princess Royal teeth though.

Monday, February 5

Scissortail Sergeant Majors

These Scissortail Sergeant Majors have become so comfortable with divers that they are quite happy to swarm around you rather than high tailing it to the safety of some coral reef.

Tuesday, January 23

Hawksbill Turtle

This week’s desktop offering from the marine world is a delightful snap of hawksbill turtle rummaging around one of the worlds most glorious coral gardens. Lucky sod

Tuesday, January 16

Lizard Fish

The book says that you will find Lizard fish sitting on small coral heads either on their own or in pairs. Well here are two for you doing just that.

Tuesday, January 9

Red Sea Anemone Fish

One for the kiddies, a cute little fish giving me the sad soleful look just before he leapt forward to ward me off his particular patch of anemone.

Tuesday, January 2

Blue spotted ray

No idea how this one got its name...well it was a close one with blue spotted shark food.
